WHAT A GEM OF A BOOK! The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie was such an inspiring, heart-warming read about Junior, a 14 year-old boy who lives on a Spokane Indian Reservation. He decides to take a leap and go to a mostly-white school off the "rez." This was a fun, quick read, with lots of fun illustrations that helped you get into Junior's head. I really enjoyed hearing about his struggles with feeling less than Indian on the reservation, but more Indian in his white school. His roller-coaster friendship with his best friend Rowdy was a great storyline as well. This was a middle-grade that was chock full of meaningful statements about growing up, identity, and friendship.

I started and finished this book in 6 hours. Now why did it take us like 2 weeks to read it in high school? That's how you know high school is an evil place! Insufferable institution!

Great book, though. I'm glad I reread it.

But I had to take away points for use of the n word. Like damn even if it's not from our main character, it's very disappointing the author wrote that in.

A cute, easy read into the dualities of living as an Indigenous person in a predominantly white society. It does feel very reflective of the time it was written in, almost idolizing the “generosity” of the white folks that Junior interacts with.
