what a sad little book — my heart breaks for little sherman alexie <3 inevitably pulled at my heartstrings as i remembered just how devastating it is to experience real, life-changing grief as a child. there’s just nothing quite like having your world change forever when you’re only 14.

First read for the banned books journal that came out in 2022. Really great ending, and very funny narration and voice. Good read. 

"That silence got so big and real that it felt like three people sat on the porch." (49:17).

"When anybody, no matter how old they are, loses a parent, I think it hurts the same as if you were only five years old, you know? I think all of us are always five years old in the presence and absence of our parents." (3:39:02).

"He may not have loved me perfectly, but he loved me as well as he could." (4:28:33).

I did not know about the controversy around the author when I picked up this book so this review is solely about the book and not the author.
It was an okay read. Definitely quick and easy to read. I liked the exploration of what it means to be Native American and how the individual is always struggling with the community. There was some stuff that was uncomfortable—I can see why it’s a banned book—and some issues I wish were addressed better than they were, but overall it was an enjoyable read.
