A clever premise and interesting story that never really had the payoff that I wanted. Still, I enjoyed the book and had no trouble staying engaged along the way.

The setting initially drew me to this book. I’m from the area and I’ve actually been to one of the islands mentioned off the UP of Wisconsin.
This book was a slog to get through. There was so much detail to set up the psychology of the island but didn’t provide any action or suspense. We never really get any info on what the First One is or how it got there and why it has to do what it does.
I just finished My Best Friend’s Exorcism, which also provides minimal explanation for the possession but plenty of action. For me, I need one (explanation) or the other (action) if I’m going to enjoy the story. Otherwise I feel like I’m listening to a child’s story that has no point.

Why in the hell did Willow & Harper need to disturb Clifford Island? That just pisses me off. Rita is a sneaky b* and I had a feeling something was off from the very beginning. Again, why did Willow & Harper need to dig and pry and do everything dumb characters do in a scary movie? I can’t tell you how many times I said “NO!” out loud. GET ON THE BOAT AND LEAVE. Lily, you want off? Go! If the characters were in front of me, I would’ve shaken every single one of them & thrown a few of them into the seminary house.
This book was FREAKING TERRIFYING. Call me a pansy or whatever you want, but it legit gave me nightmares for NIGHTS ON END. Continuous ones too. Jimmy Juliano has some sick descriptive words and it’s like a train wreck. I can’t help but watch. I cringed at the description of the haunting things. I’m pretty sure this one pushed me over the edge for scary, spooky, horror…all of it for the year. I’m still going to go tell y’all to go read it. Do yourself a favor-put tinfoil on your head while reading it so the dead people don’t know your thoughts.

June 2023 selection for the Nightmares from Nowhere book club.
Astonishingly fun and creepy! Equal parts haunted island, found footage collage, millennial nostalgia, and dread filled mystery.
Perfect for fans of found footage style storytelling, unreliable narrators, the 1990s, and creepy islands
