This was an incredible, biographical children's book somewhat along the same lines of They Were Strong and Good, in which the author uses his family as the book's topic, highlighting their accomplishments as well as how their legacy is passed down to further generations.  Even better, however, is the small family history of a black man that is now able to be shared among a new audience, showing that there is always a better choice, and showing that one can change their ways with a new outlook and new environment.  Overall, it's a great tale that's uplifting and creative.

In this case, a new environment provides inspiration to make pretty things instead of taking them. The collage illustrations are expressive.
