I really love this author’s writing style. Everything is so civilized and British. This mystery did t actually stick to formula because one could t solve it on your own, but I really liked the ride.

Not gonna lie: this was really hard for me to finish/ keep up with. It took me so long that when the mystery was solved I didn't even recognize some of the people, and (supposedly) shocking revelations just caused me to really force my memory to try and discover what exactly did I miss, since no shock occurred. I much preferred Tey's first novel. However flawed, at least it captured my attention enough to want to finish it. This was just... so dull. The opposite of what murder mysteries should be. Really disappointed.

It’s the quality of the writing and excellent subtle plotting that does it. Ignore the non PC statements that creep in from time time - a reflection on the period when the books were written. Tey is a mistress of the genre.

A Shilling for Candles is another classic English mystery by Tey. The novel and Inspector Grant reminds me more of P.D. James' work than Agatha Christie's. Whereas Christie's characters seem a bit one-dimensional at times, Tey's have depth and lives that seem to extend beyond the boundaries of the story. At time Tey's writing seemed a bit overdone, taking you out of the story, but not in a good way. I occasionally found myself thinking, "Wow. That was a lot of big, flowery words in one sentence." Yet at other times, Tey creates wonderful images. Overall, a good classic mystery for fans of the genre.
