I really wanted to like this more than I did. There are some really cool ideas here and the premise really checks all of my boxes, but the pacing is super wonky, the characters are so underdeveloped that it’s hard to remember most of their names, and it suffers from one of the worst cases of ‘author needing to learn how to show not tell’ that I’ve ever come across. I can usually get behind horror with heavy handed messaging, but I’ve just never read a horror/thriller book devoid of a single moment that felt suspenseful or tense or scary.  Stars for good plot but bad execution.

adventurous challenging dark emotional mysterious

I am always in awe of writers who can create an entire world within the pages of a novella. And I absolutely love the epic horror in V. Castro's work.

This one was excellent, reminiscent of The Craft but with gorgeous and terrifying Mexican lore and sadly familiar, extreme religious views.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

first 30 pages gave clunky writing style and poor editing. i hate being That Person but precede and proceed are different words and an editor should’ve caught that!

Will revisit, lost track of plot (my problem with attention not the book’s). I want to find a day to read it in one sitting since it’s a novella.
