The Once and Future Witches by Alix E Harrow is a fierce, magical, and empowering story. Witches, suffrage, and a lost library? Count me in!

Harrow has a lovely way with words and the ability to draw you in with vivid stories that cleverly weaves in modern issues. She has the ability to bring the beauty and ugliness of the human experience together to make genuine characters and personalities, and her plots allow for those characters to bloom. This story has an odd sense of being both genuinely unique and a classic fable.

My only critique would be that there were a few places where it felt like the story was going to wrap up, but then slows down to build back up again. This is purely my own preference for the pace of the story and it might just be that I was so into the story and ravenous for the writing that I got impatient at times.

Pick this up for any reason, though if you are looking for a well rounded, thoughtful story and characters that grow and something with both heart and teeth, this is definitely for you.

On a side note: As a pagan, there can be a lot of cringy appropriation and simplification of its paths, symbols, and rituals, but this was beautifully creative and sensitively written. It is a rare book that I would consider as pagan inspiration fiction, though you certainly don't need to be on a pagan path to enjoy it. I just found an exceptional resonance with it.
