This was a great sequel! The new characters and setting helped it feel fresh and set it apart from the first book, while the narration felt familiar and comfortable. There are still a lot of things going on to keep track of, but less death and family drama than the first one.

Outside of reading Agatha Christie’s novels, I’ve been more engaged with this story without ever knowing that this was the second book to Stevenson’s works.
The sequel is set shortly after the first book, as Ernest Cunningham – the main character whose hobby is breaking the 4th wall, attends an Australian Mystery Writers’ Conference on a luxury train. Now, this book definitely had a slow start. However, the plot thickens as their keynote speaker is murdered. Before the murderer comes after anyone else, Ernest and his mystery writer experts must solve this puzzle using a combination of their expertise.
I love that Ernest takes the time to present his findings as the book, where he first starts unsure of what he was planning on putting together, and then scrambles to find a way to voice everyone’s motives in his big reveal. There is no need for him to try and pull off bravado or even any crazy maneuvers to win over his audience, because he’s earnestly talking to the reader and asking them to deduce what really has been going on throughout his tale.
