2.5 STARS
CW: murder, death, blood, gore
This book has taught me that I will read anything if you advertise it to me as metafiction and I will stick through it even when I'm not enjoying it particularly. That being said, the book was fine (reflected in my average rating, right down the middle of 5 potential stars).
I enjoyed some of the metanarrative comments but my enjoyment of the book overall was seriously impeded by my distaste and annoyance with the narrator, Ernest Cunningham. I did not vibe with him at all, I thought he was annoying, a little obnoxious and unnecessarily whiny throughout the book.
Maybe murder mystery books are not 100% my taste. I think I can pick them up every now and then if something in the setting or blurb catches my attention but generally, I'm not very drawn to this type of story...
That being said, if you are looking for a murder mystery and enjoy some narratological shenanigans, this may fit your taste. I definitely wouldn't not recommend the book, it was a nice read but I'm also not particularly sad that it is now over. I did really like that it was set in Australia though.
