High highs and low lows in this one. I need to read the finale before I can give a real rating. Will revisit.

Death. Lies. Betrayal.

The third installment of The Faithful and the Fallen is a step away from the previous coming-of-age adventures. There is still adventure, there are still lessons to be learned, there is still growing up to do. But more than anything it is an adventure fantasy, full of war and death and lies and glory. The God War is upon us.

Nathair has accepted his role as the Black Sun, the champion of Asroth. He marches back to Tenebral with Calidus and Alycon in tow, to spread his empire, hunt out those who would oppose him. On the opposite side of the war there is Corban, who has come to terms with being the Bright Star, the champion of Elyon. He is surrounded by friends and allies (many of them POV characters in their own right; Coralen, Cywen, Tukul, etc).

In the west Camlin tries to return Edana to power, Evnis trying to prevent them from doing so as he searches for his son, Vonn, part of Edana's entourage, and attempts to return him to his side. In the east Haelan attempts to survive, searches for the ability to regain his throne. Meanwhile in Isiltir, Ulfilas, Jael's shieldman, attempts to reconcile his deeds in the present with those in the coming future.

Everyone is lying to Veradis. It's what he will find, what he will learn that will change the outcome of the God-War, the outcome of the future of the Banished Lands themselves. There will be blood spilt, minds turned, glory and honor won. And there will be death, so much death.

4.8/5 stars

-UPDATE-

I seem to be pretty lenient on my ratings so far this year. Maybe up until recently I've been reading absolute crap. Maybe I'm just easily pleased. Maybe I need an escape more than usual. Or maybe The Faithful and the Fallen just delivers in a big, big way.

I guess we'll find out.
