This was an enjoyable low thinking book. Learning the three main groups (basically live vampires, dead vampires, and the half vampire class that supports and protects the live ones) was a bit of a struggle for me. I’ve definitely got down the dead ones now since they are villainized frequently (and not unfairly so far). There are definitely a few reveals that I saw coming. But I’m pretty sure this is YA fiction so that’s understandable and fine. I’ll continue the series and that doesn’t feel like a burden. 😉

I can imagine the author writing this book in sections with different voices, almost as if challenging her writing from various perspectives and venues - it seems disjointed at times & I think the editor could've helped more with the flow, her second book already has a more unified voice.

I skipped about a third of this bc YA is dull, cishet YA romance is even duller. Fun for vampire lore, loved the female BFFs and their focus in the story. Has been fun for research on drama of fantasy royalty, and inspires me to write more!

Reminiscent of Buffy; I dig this TV series A LOT - maybe moreso than the way the books have the story

I thought the book was alright. The writing isn't bad and I find the characters to be rather interesting. I thought the pacing was rather slow and it didn't really pick up until the last few chapters. I don't care for the relationship between Rose and Dimitri.

This is certainly one of those books that I know I would have ate up in high school, but reading it now is like reading the pilot script for a CW show, plus
Rose and Dmitri's relationship just gives me so much ick.
