It felt very fragmented and ephemeral. I feel like there could have been more, and the reader was held at arms’ length away from the core of the writing.

Graphic: Death, Gore, Grief
this will definitely warrant a reread from me. I am not a big poetry guy so framing a short story as a long-form poem is not the weight of my heart. however, I can acknowledge objectively good writing and there was plenty of it here. as to whether the sentiments dealing with grief and loss offered anything new or original I will have to chew on for a while. My first impression is, while it expresses some beautiful ideas, it is mostly compiling them rather than generating them.

'For a souvenir, for a warning, for a lick of night in the morning.
For a little break in the mourning'.
For a little break in the mourning'.
A beautiful, challenging book about grief and about life. I think seeing Porter speak/perform live definitely helped me approach this, as his manner on stage is definitely well translated into his writing. Often non-conventional but always striking, I'd highly recommend Grief... for an exploration of the titular experience as well as just a beautiful at life.
