This book is my go-to comfort book. I love the whole series and no joke read them at least 4 times a year. Once you fall into the story you just get trapped and you really feel like the character. You go on the adventures, understand the life, and feel how they feel. I really connected to this book too. Shannon Messenger did an incredible job writing this.
This book took me forever to finish. Partly because it was far too cold to go for my morning walks and also because I was not too invested in the story of a human elf girl with powers. One of my students recommended this book to me and I read (well listened to) all 400 pages of it. I can see why kids would be charmed by this book but I have never really been into fantasy.

I’ve had several of my middle school girls rave about this book, so I read it for them but it’s just okay.
Feels very Harry Potter influenced with the main character finding out she had super special powers and going to magic school, which is always a fun premise. It was still a fun easy read and some of the side characters were great (let’s go Keefe!) and there were some sweet “found family” moments, but the main character is just way too perfect and special and good at…everything…
The whole “I’m not like other girls” thing is just annoying and the other female characters in the book are either forgettable or just kinda terrible people.
I’m not 12 anymore so obviously not the target audience, but I really think that GREAT children’s literature is great adult literature as well and this just doesn’t have the thematic or emotional depth I was hoping for.
