Soooooooooooooooooooo good
The moment I read the word "elf", I immediately wanted to close the book and throw it to the pits of hell where all the other cliche, cringey children's / YA books belong. But I decided to suck it up and push through and I'm glad I did. It's definitely not the best written book I've read or anything, but it's definitely better than so many other books in this category. The author tried her best to not follow the usual pattern when it comes to fantasy/ syfy books. She took the concept of "elf" and completely changed it, twisting scientific facts to create a world no one thought could exist.
One of my biggest annoyances with this book is that the adults keep fussing her and trying to punish her for knowing and doing things that she didn't know were illegal. This seems to be a recurring theme in books. Let's not tell the child anything then get mad when they either a. break the law unknowingly, b. ask questions constantly, or c. gets in some type of troublesome situation.
4/5 stars. Great plot, okay characters, pretty good writing for a children's story (though with this content and the ages of the characters it really should be considered YA). Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Enjoyed this book, especially as the first in a series. It set up the world well. I wish there was more female companionship and less internalized misogyny.
