This book was sold to me as a “Female Harry Potter” and it’s not that. It’s not fair to either series to be compared to each other. I liked it, and I’ll eventually complete the series.

one of my favorite series of all time!!! i started reading it when i was like 10 (around the time nightfall came out) and i’ve loved following it ever since :)) it’s such a huge part of my life, i love these characters and this world so dearly!!! <33

3.75 - no offense but I would 100% be committing war crimes if I was the most powerful telepath to exist and would not be snitching on myself like this little freak sophie
Depuis le temps que j'entends parler de cette saga... Alors si je n'ai franchement pas été emballée par le début, je dois dire que la sous-intrigue qui commence à se tisser vers la moitié du roman (et qui devient vite le fil conducteur au rythme des enquêtes secrètes de Sophie) est très prenante... On suit avec plaisir et intérêt le personnage de Sophie qui découvre ses origines et le Nouveau Monde dans lequel elle vit désormais... Il reste énormément de questions en suspens et on sent également que nous sommes aux prémices d'une histoire bien plus complexe qu'elle n'y parait de prime abord. J'ai hâte de commencer le second tome !

This was a fun and delightful start to a middle grade fantasy series with lots of magic and secrets and twists.
Sophie Foster has been a Telepath since she was 5 years old and has been able to keep it a secret. However, when she meets Fitz, a Telepath like her, everything in her life changes and she is whisked away to a whole new world full of magic and secrets that she has never heard of.
Sophie has to learn how to live in this new world and discovers the secrets of her own past and why she seems to be so powerfully advanced for someone her age.
I believe it is really hard to find a good common ground for middle grade but Shannon Messenger created an immersive world full of fun stories and adventures that will keep you glued to the page.
This book sets up the series nicely and I have no doubt that this story will only get better.

I read this because my 12 year old niece recommended it to me. At 12 I probably would've enjoyed this more. But the clunky writing and rushed pace was distracting. So many parts that need more of an explanation beyond "Sophie is special." Book had a lot of potential but fell short for me.
