I wanted a book on true crime. I thought a book of short stories would be the way to go. I really didn't like it. I almost DNF, but I powered through. I did find the story set in Sisters, Oregon fascinating. I've been there many times and will now see that cute little town with a different lens.

Most of the stories are interesting. My only quibble with Trillin is his fondness for using the "(blank) and (blank) and (blank)" construction rather than simply using commas. Mr. Trillin, please use commas.

I checked this book out from my local library using the Libby app.

Extremely interesting! This is one I could see myself re-reading in the future. Random stories of murder, accidents, and so on over the last couple hundred years. I loved that the writer took stories most people wouldn't have heard of, solely because people have just forgotten about them over the years, and sadly such events are quite common.

Like Truman Capote, but boring and with more Iowa.

Great true crime journalism that’s really a look at the entire United States, its customs, its people, its way of life. A few stuck with me - the “bad girl” thrown from a car when her father started chasing them to bring her home, the loser who arbitrarily shot a bunch of teenagers because they were swimming in a river and he was there....
