This book decimated my heart.
There is a constant, unbearable dichotomy of delight and distress, victory and failure, and give and take that swirls around Nemesis' every move.
OH there are so many things about this book I want to share and discuss *right this second* but I refuse to spoil a single element of the story because it spoke so powerfully to where I am in my life right now; I want you to experience it on your own terms.

I thought this was a stand-alone! FOOLED!! I kept thinking that the pacing was really strange... and now I know why -_-
Overall, a cool world/concept. Wish it had been fleshed out more. Would have been a higher rating, but I felt the characters were lacking. Nemesis was the most fleshed out, but I didn't even feel much of an emotional connection/attachment to her
I just want to say that this was the first SciFi book that I have actually really enjoyed. I really love this book. I fell in love with the world and Nemesis as a character was very likable to me mostly because I can relate to the way she thinks and even her opinions were often same as mine while I was reading this book.

I'm not a fan of this ending, but the story and the world is totally addicting.
I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE WHOLE WORLD GETS TO READ THIS.
I ended up loving this book. But it could have went either way for me. Why? Well, despite the action-heavy book blurb, this is actually a romance story. And usually I hate when action stories are really romances. So why didn't I hate this book? What did it do right?
#1 - This is NOT instalove. The plot is allowed to take shape and heat up before we even meet the one who will eventually become the love interest. And when we do, it's not love yet, it's a reluctant partnership that slowly becomes something more.
#2 - The heroine isn't sappy or melodramatic. Because of that, I really enjoyed being in Nemesis's head. She's a very original character for a romance lead since she doesn't believe she's human, and because of that doesn't believe she can love or deserves love. Yet she's not upset about this. It's just the way her life is. Watching her romantic transformation happen, something she's not trying to make happen, is much more interesting than watching some sappy heroine pine after a guy she can't have. Nemesis doesn't even consider pining, and that's awesome.
#3 - Even though ultimately Nemesis's character transformation happened because of the romance plot, the action plot was never neglected or put on the backburner. In fact, the action led the romance, even if the romance was what the heroine needed to truly succeed. This story is intricate, full of surprising characters and plot twists, and always went somewhere I wasn't fully expecting.
CONCLUSION - I highly recommend this book. Yes, it's ultimately a romance, but a completely kickass, action-packed, sci-fi adventure as well! I think even readers who generally shun romance (like me) will enjoy The Diabolic. And I'm going to read it again just to try to figure out how the author made me love this fictional couple so much. I was dying for them to get together, and I rarely feel like that about book characters.

Intriguing.
(It took me this long to finish because SciFi is a hard genre for me to wrap my head around. It wasn’t a breezy read ;-; but to be able to recommend this book says a lot coming from a non scifi fan.)
