Wait... I thought this was a stand alone?
Well I'm going to treat it as one, unless the reviews for the sequel are just AMAZING.
I don't really understand why this book has so many 4 and 5 star ratings. I really don't. Its not a bad book, but its definitely not 5 star worthy.
What I liked :
* I loved the insane dynamic between the Emporer and the rest of the family. So much backstabbing and plotting. AND I'M HERE FOR IT!
* I really liked the homage to Roman society, but in a futuristic sense. I thought that was really unique and interesting.
* Tyrus... Especially in the first half of the book. Overall, I think he's my favorite character. He was smart and capable. A little too love-sick for me by the end, but he's at least interesting throughout the entire book.
* The last quarter of the book was pretty engaging. I was super into it unlike most of the rest of the story up until that point.
What I disliked :
* Nemisis! Oh my God, can you shut up?! I thought she was supposed to be a bad ass character? She is just so wrapped up in her existential crisis to be any sort of use. WE GET IT! You're not human, but you have feeeeeeliiiiiings. You are not capable of caring for anyone (besidesThe Human Yawn Sidonia, for reasons) but you ALSO love Tyrus... WHAT'S A HUMANOID TO DO?!
AND THE END Nemisis is honestly so dumb, if she weren't stupid strong she would have been died hundreds of times over.
Pictured (me):

* Sidonia. She is just the most nothing character who has ever nothing-ed. She offers nothing to this story besides being the reason for Nemesis' many crises.
* The foreshadowing in this book is too heavy handed. You could see all of the reveals coming miles away.
* For a book that is described as "brutal", there wasn't much with the stabby-stab. There are like 2 scenes that are truly cringe worthy in this 400+ page book. Maybe my brutal bar is too high, but this is not exactly violent.

Spoiler
How are you going to believe the grandmother when you know she's a lying backstabber who back stabs?!Pictured (me):

Who among shed a tear when she died? And I mean, like, for real this time guys... Literally no one? Oh yes, that's right.* The foreshadowing in this book is too heavy handed. You could see all of the reveals coming miles away.

Reread Edit 12/20/20
Rereads almost always boost a book up in rating and this is no exception! I was a much more critical reader in 2017 I guess. But right now, after this year? This book was so flippin' good! I didn't find the pace slow (granted I read it in just a few days) and the romance didn't bother me one bit (though that might be because I know what happens in The Empress). In any case, this gets boosted to 5 stars!

I had no idea what was going to happen in this book at the beginning. Everything was new and exciting as the reader had to catch up on the lingo and the new history about the human race in this world created. However, once Nemesis got to the Chrysanthemum, I could pretty much call everything that would and did happen. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the plot. For me, there weren’t many BIG moments, just an even plateau of ebbs and flows. This may be because it took me about three weeks to read (life was crazy) so it may have a bit more impact when read during a few days time instead.
I’d recommend this to anyone who likes interesting sci-fi, wants to feel like hating humans is valid for a little while (in light of the real world humans around us that make us a little less than supportive of our species), and who want to read a book filled with morally gray characters who can’t really be considered heroes or villains…this is the book for you!
Four of five stars just because of the way the romantic relationship was completed in the final chapter, and the semi-slowness of the plot.

Talk about action .. never a dull moment. There is literally something happening on every single page of this book that makes you want to read it and keep reading it, and then re read it to make sure what you read was what actually happened! Love books like that <3
