A stunning piece of in-depth and absorbing reportage that makes me either want to give up writing forever or keep trying. I can’t decide which one. Props to Lillian Ross for setting such a high standard for new journalism.

When doing a non-fiction novel and doing it faithful to the truth, sometimes events come in and louse up what should be a better reality. And John Huston taking off so early to make The African Queen does that. Because he is a far more compelling personage than anyone else, the energy abates a little.

Still, the extrapolation of the themes of Red Badge to the story of the making of this movie and using that to subtly (or ambiguously) show people in moments that call for courage, desert their position in the war for art and adaptation was excellent.

A great book.
