This book is just BAD. It's not even worth the time to explain why. The info dumps, the slow pace, the questionable consent (don't get me started because Hawke makes me furious), and predictable plot twist ALMOST made me DNF it. The average 4.23 star rating on Goodreads is actually really shocking to me though! The dark skinned ladies maid is named Tawny, like come on! 🙄 I'm super bummed that Casteel turns out to be toxic af because he was so promising! Just look at his fan art (which can I say is👌god tier👌).. So disappointing! 😭😭

The overall story, setting, and cast make this book an easy page turner that I did not want to put down. However, my two main criticisms:

1) The predictability + Poppy's naivety. There were so many times in the book I felt frustrated with Poppy because she was so clueless. I understand she is supposed to be that way given her sheltered upbringing, but when the plot of the book is so easily predictable, it can be hard to get through 500 pages of waiting for the main character to figure it all out as well.

2) The banter. I think the author has some good strengths but her main weakness is writing dialogue. I started to dislike Hawke towards the end of the book simply because I was so tired of the same formulaic back-and-forth quips between him and Poppy.

Regardless, I think the book is a worthwhile read, and I'm looking forward to book two.

The main character was so frustrating. I should've DNFed, but I was curious where it would go. It got worse.

This contains one of the best castle attacks I've ever found described in a book. However, I don't understand how an unhealthy romantic relationship is supposed to be sexy.
