This is the first book of Ms. Midwood’s that I have had the honor, and pleasure, to read. I thank you, Ms Midwood, for sharing Mala’s story; and for reminding all of us to stand up for what is right. May Mala’s, and Edek’s, memories be a blessing.

As usual it’s the notes at the end which bring you back to the fact that this is based on reality and it becomes a powerful book.

Absolutely heartbreaking, but I am so glad I got to learn of these two legends. May their memories be a blessing.

És un llibre que costa al principi, és molt descriptiu i sembla que avança poc a poc. Tanmateix, plasma a la perfecció el que debia ser la realitat a Auschwitz. La història commou, és impossible aguantar la llàgrima i quedar-se indiferent.

I could barely get through this book, unfortunately. Despite being based on a true story, both the story and the writing felt romanticized. I’ve struggled in the past with similarly toned books and have regretted my attempts to overlook the uneasiness I’ve felt about them due to a high rating average. This kind of World War II fiction just isn’t for me.
