This story is about the strength of the concentration camp prisoners. There are many stories about the lengths people would go to to stay safe and alive. This is the first story I have read about an escape plan. At the end of the book the author explains what events were real and who the characters were based on.
I rated this book three stars not because the story is unimportant but because it did not capture my attention as much as I’d hoped. I struggled reading the middle of the book and found my attention wandering.

The Girl Who Escaped Auschwitz, a novel based on the true story of Mala Zimetbaum, was definitely a compelling story. It added a great layer to the stories of Auschwitz-Birkenau and told of the sacrifice, tenacity and hope of the prisoners in the camps.
The only drawback for me in the book is I felt it was a little wordy and a more work than it needed to be. The author often weaved decent-sized sections of backstories or the characters’ reminiscing right in between the dialogue in a conversation, but then jump right back into the other side of the conversation. It was so much off-topic by then that I often had to go back and read again what the characters were talking about in the first place because it side tracked so much. It felt a little more complicated than it needed to be and made the story drag on a bit for me.
Thanks to Netgalley for the early read in exchange for an honest review.

I got this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.Ellie Midwood doesn’t transport you to another time and place, she lives there and invites you to sit next to her in the death camp while she tells these stories. This book is is based on the true story of Mally Zimetbaum and Edek (Edward) Galinski and their escape attempt from Auschwitz.

The Girl Who Escaped From Auschwitz by Ellie Midwood is out today, and is a harrowing story of Edek and Mala living at Auschwitz - Birkenau during WWII. Despite the horrors they encounter daily, they are compassionate human beings, doing their best to survive while doing small things to help others. When their paths cross, they end up helping each other find reason to fight another day. Will they be able to escape, or survive until they are rescued?

This book had my emotions going. It was stressful, heartbreaking, and beautiful all in one. The characters all had depth beyond the surface, engaging me more in the story. And while some of the pages are incredibly difficult to read (what happened to people historically is horrific), there were also some very touching parts.
.
Add this to (the top!) of your WWII must-read list. It won’t disappoint!

I received an advanced copy of this book. I have voluntarily read it and the review expresses my own personal opinions.

Honestly, I loved this book. It took me FOREVER to read because I was in a “funk” but once I got into it, I breezed right through it. While I wished nothing but for a better/different ending, I know the ending based on true events could not be changed. Highly recommend!
