Loved this so much that I was tempted to come give it a 5 star rating only about twenty minutes into the book, but I held off until I finished so I could give a complete review ❤️.
Dorian, a psychic, and his (kinda but not really) boyfriend (why label it when it is easier to leave him on read), Milo, a clairvoyant, are making out one night when they have a joint vision of a teenager being murdered. Turns out the kid is one of Dorian's students. It is that age-old question of can you change the future?
I didn't need to read the author's biography to know he was a teacher. As a former educator, only a teacher could write with such true hatred of that first week of before school starts, when admin wastes your time, teachers who do not leave lesson plans, or the detail put into an IEP.
Looking forward to reading the next book!!!

The writing is just a bit painful to read and the storytelling is slow and dull.
Wow. I'm struggling to find the words to tell you how much I loved this book. Unforgettable characters, a well-developed magical world, and a grumpy MC you can't help but love. Bennet does an amazing job of building tension, both with the main plot, and the romantic subplot. In a world of magic, where politics are tricky, and danger looms on the horizon, you'll find yourself caught up in Dorian's story, and fall in love with his need to protect those near to him. The magic academy felt very reminiscent of American schools, which just made this feel all the more real. Bennet just seems to have a knack for weaving the supernatural in with the real. An excellent way to start off a new series, and I can't wait to see what book two has in store!
Overall my thoughts after finishing this book are so conflicted and jumbled, I don’t know how to make them all make sense. To summarize: the writing lost me at times, the romance missed me, and the students were cool.
In more detail….
I don’t know if it’s a me thing, but no matter how hard I tried I just did not feel the chemistry between the love interests. I felt chemistry amongst the angsty teens (who were great!) but the actual romantic aspect was lacking for me - like that whole vibe loved in the past. Maybe that was the entire point and that was over my head & book two brings the real romantic subplot? I’m not sure.
Great magical system. Great world building. I was confused at times like the big reveals didn’t click into place or were not as climatic as the emotional build up… to put it bluntly it felt like the romance and main antagonist was building and building but then… the big conflict just didn’t pack a punch or not the punch with resolution I was expecting ? Again, maybe that’s a book 2 thing.
This felt like a story about the students not at all about the romantic subplot of the adults - if the focus had been solely on the banding together of the students I think that would be awesome…. Maybe the writing was just above my abilities idk I’m gonna stop rambling now though and say if you have Kindle Unlimited GO FOR IT!

What a unique gem of a read! This book intertwines a romance story of two men getting beyond losing their third while also trying to investigate the possible future death of a student. Dorian is just getting by, but as a teacher his dedication to his students keeps him going. Poor Milo the one whose kiss starts the whole chain of events also brings hope to Dorian's hurt and grief. Milo brings in the lighter and definitely more sexy side of things as well! Their sex is literally magical! The world building and bits of magic and darkness are so naturally woven in that they seem realistic. I enjoyed that we got to really know some of the student's personalities and I am looking forward to more at this academy.
