I love the way that Heather Gudenkauf writes! She tells the story from all sides which pulls you deep within the story. Being a mom, this story touches me deeply. I could feel Ellen's pain and feel her frustration. I could also sympathize with Jenny. I like how she winds the story around these two characters' hardships then intertwines their plights into one common goal. I look forward to reading many more of her books.

DISCLAIMER- I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Honest is all you get from me when it comes to books.

Heather Gudenkauf has done it again! As a mom , I knew this book was going to hit home & it really did. There are days where I have so much to get done & so much on my mind, I feel like it's all a blur & I move on auto pilot. This story reminds us to slow down a bit & also we are all capable of mistakes, some more costly then others. LOVED the characters in this book - little Jenny was just awesome & I root for her all the way through.
Love Hearher's writing style & I'm always patiently waiting for her next book to get published. Her books are always deep, but never over the top where all I do is cry. Highly recommend this & honestly ALL her books.
Anyone who lives nearby let me know, happy to share my copy!!!

Heather Gudenkauf grabbed me at page 24 and didn't let me go until I had finished the book. The characters evolved through the book and allowed me to feel the pain they shared as a young one lies in the hospital. Make sure when you start this book you have nothing else planned.

The author sets up a very compelling scenario centered around family secrets and the question, “Was it an accident or endangerment?” I would love to discuss this book with someone who actually works both with abused children and in law enforcement. I think it would be a very enlightening discussion. My only problem with this book is that many storylines were left unresolved. Trigger warning: this contains many descriptions of child abuse and neglect.

I didn't expect to be affected by this book. It is nothing special, the plot twists and somewhat cliche, and yet for some reason I couldn't hold back tears the entire time that I read it. It's just another novel, just another formula of twists and turns and emotional upheavals, but the pain and desire in these characters is so intense that I had to stop and cry when I turned the final page. Recommended to anyone who loves having their heart broken by the written word.

TW: Child Abuse/Neglect

This book was good is the most surprising of ways. Two pages in and I was ✨hooked.✨ I found myself gasping and crying at parts, just surprised by everything this book held. It was so beautifully written and unexpected from what I’ve been reading recently. Absolutely recommend this one.

3.5 - 4 stars!
The first half of this book was so difficult to read on an emotional level. As a mother, I completely panicked when we were told what happened to Ellen Moore and her family. I felt like it could have easily been me in her place and I found myself paranoid that I could unconsciously make such a life altering mistake as well. All I wanted to do was cry! (I'm leaving out what happened to avoid spoilers)

Then we learn how Jenny and Ellen's paths cross and we think we can relax because we know exactly what's going to happen, but Gudenkauf keeps a few surprises up her sleeves.

This is the 3rd book that I've read by Gudenkauf, and unfortunately this one bothered me a little bit. I felt like the ending was a little too rushed and there were some events that occurred in the last few chapters that were only talked about, rather than experienced and I believe it left a small hole in the story. I also had a problem with sentence construction in this book that I unfortunately couldn't look past.

Overall it was a really good story and I look forward to discussing it at book club next week!

This was an amazing, heart-wrenching story of a hardworking, caring and loving mother who makes a mistake that could change her entire world. It is one of those books that makes us remember that our lives can change so quickly and that some times we need to slow down and pay attention to our surroundings and appreciate the little things.

‎my second book written by Heather Gudenkauf, and there is no disappointment here. She has managed to find her way into my top 5 favorite authors.

this I picked this book up this book based on all of the hype surrounding it. I am not disappointed. Heather makes you fall in love with Jenny, and her childhood point of view. so innocent and pure, the complete selfishness of a child... how with everything that's happening Jenny manages to misconstrue every event to be about Jenny and her situation.
definitely a solid book all around.
