3.95 AVERAGE

Due to pet peeves of mine, more 3.5 rating, take those out and its a 5 star read.

Ellen Moore is a social worker. She is also a mom of three and mornings are chaotic and things happen. As a protector of children she shouldn't allow "accidents" to happen to her child but it did.

Jenny is a 10 yr old with an upsetting past and a father who is barely holding it together. As things happen, she finds herself alone in the world.

Ellen's mother just by chance takes Jenny under her care, while Ellen's life is falling apart.

This was wrote in 2014 so the accident was shell shocking, but sadly still happens today. Gudenkauf does a superb job of following the law, we see Ellen's anguish as the system she works for is turned against her.

Jenny makes decisions way beyond the scope of a regular 10 yr old, but she has seen too much of the ugliness to make rational choices.

Pet peeves is how the secondary story of Jenny was not needed, especially how it connects to Ellen and endings ties up a little too neatly for my taste

I loved the overall message of this story and our Little Mercies in life. As a social worker, Ellen's story, along with Jenny's, gave me all the feels. Just like the story, the career is heart breaking and heart warming all at the same time. I really enjoyed all the characters in this story

Quick-moving 3.5 star book that ended conveniently.

I really really really liked this book. I am a giant chick-lit fan, but lately have been getting into more drama/mystery/crime books.

Ellen, a social worker, goes on a call to a home she's been to before where the children are clearly in a bad home situation, but she forgets that her infant daughter is in the backseat of her parked van in the summertime heat. While her daughter is in the hospital fighting for her life, Ellen finds herself fighting against charges of child neglect and abuse.

It's one of those books that hits really close to home as a mom and it kept me on the edge of my seat.

I definitely recommend it, and I will definitely check out more of her books.

This was my first book by Heather Gudenkauf - I received this in a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

It's a very quick read. As a mom, the beginning was a bit difficult to read, but overall a decent story. I'll have to check out other books by Gudenkauf.

The paths of a social worker and a runaway cross in an unusual way after the social worker makes a careless mistake that brings her abilities as a social worker and a mother into question. Good contemporary fiction with well developed characters and a compelling storyline.

This was a pretty good book. Unfortunately I did find myself skipping around a little. For most of the book it was a very quick read, but then right in the middle it started to slow down and get a tad bit boring. But over all it tied up nicely and I enjoyed it. I am interested in some of the author's other books and will be looking into reading them. I liked her style and didn't come into contact of anything overly annoying.

I recommend it.

I don’t know what it is about Heather’s writing that always pulls me in so strongly and instantly. This was the last book of hers that I had not read so I was trying to put it off because now I’m just waiting on new books from her.
