2.5 ⭐️ pretty meh romance. I read it and moved on to the next book before reviewing so I can’t even remember what it’s about…so that’s the review in and of itself

I have not had as much fun reading a book as I did this one in a very, very long time.

That being said, is this book objectively good?
No. No it is not.

The characters are great, very likeable. Funny, smart, and motivated. There's just not a ton of service done to the dilemmas in this story that give us any depth to any of them.

There's not a ton of closure given to Avery's strained relationship with her father. The wedding planning (minus the dress shopping) happens ENTIRELY off page and seemingly without any of the bride or groom's input whatsoever. The drama surrounding the sale of the restaurant feels like it almost always happens off camera. And we don't get to see the resolution only get to hear about it from a one-sided phone call with Avery. The fact that "the enemy" finds out about the fake wedding and does NOTHING with the information was a letdown too.

All of the deep, gritty, angsty stuff simply doesn't exist in this book.

Even the relationship between Emmett and Avery moves from enemies to lovers with little to no resistance and at the speed of light. They jump from negotiating the terms of their fake relationship to engagement to marriage in the span of like 36 hours.

And there were moments early on that I really wondered if I was going to be able to buy that these two fall for each other at all, because of how strongly Avery's POV has her detesting the man. She mis-reads him up until well over halfway through the book, calling his smiles and his kindnesses fake, even after she begins to see that he's actually not the slimy schmoozer she's pegged him as. There's virtually no time for transition between "oh my god he's so fake I can't stand men like him" to "oh my god I need his hands and his mouth on me right now or I might die."

I actually believed Emmett's realization of his feelings more than I did hers. And that's not saying very much because his past trauma regarding people just not thinking he's the 'settling down' type is never really delved into either.

This is just one of those books you have to read with your eyes squinted. If you don't look too close and just allow yourself to have fun with it, this will be a grand old time. For better or worse, there's no angst, and no third act breakup either. It's pure  hilarity and good vibes.

Because this feels like all of the deeper more meaningful elements were left out of this book, I can't give it more than 3 stars. BUT! If you like the fake-relationship trope and want a fun, hilarious, fast afternoon read. Give this one a go. If you manage your expectations, I think you'll have a good time.
