This book was okay, just wasn’t my thing.

I mean, it was ok. It had the potential to be really good, but this was very slow and dense. Serpent & Dove romance was very much inspired by Helnik from Six of Crows and I would say this very much
Sarah J Maas's ACOTAR Feysand.
I felt like much of this book was more of a lead up to the meat of the story than anything else. I'm sure fans of original series will like it.

I struggled for the first 50% of this book. it was slow, I was getting very annoyed with célie and everyone around her, and there was just a lot going around with no explanation.
the second half? hooked me. SM is very similar to SJM in the sense that she loves to have a lot of action in the last (in this case) 25 pages.
this ends on a cliff hanger (A MAJOR ONE AT THAT) and I couldn’t be more pissed, because now I just have to know.

Originally when I heard this would be a Celie book I really wasn’t keen, she was my least favorite character from S&D and Jean Luc is the worst person. But so glad I got past that because I absolutely loved this book, the continuation and growth of the world was so amazing. Yes the vampires are very cliche but cliches work for a reason. The character development for Celie was just perfect! Now I’m just depressed I have to wait for book 2

Wish I remembered a bit more about the previous trilogy, but I am looking forward to this next book.

I loved this.

Célie was silly, irrational and temperamental but she was also strong, hardworking and so incredibly brave. The Scarlette Veil quickly became my favourite book in an already favourite series. What made it such was the characters, they were brilliant.

Firstly, I loved the host of characters from Serpent and Dove, how Célie perceived them, kind of glorifying them because of the magical abilities they had. It felt so real. You read Serpent and Dove trilogy and Lou is very open about her poor choices and the things she is conflicted over, in POV but Célie, as her friend, sees her in a shinier light than she does herself and I think that is real and beautiful and such clever writing. The same with Jean-Luc, the way he treats Célie with his dismissive attitude of her achievements, downplaying her heroic contribution to the death of Dame Blanche in Gods and Monsters, was so reminiscent to his attitude towards Ried in Serpent and Dove where he implied nepotism for Ried becoming leader of the Chasseurs.’ As a character reader, this consistency was such clever writing. I loved it, I loved how realistic it made them.

Secondly, I loved the new characters. Dark and morally grey, Michal who was in mourning for his lost sister, yes please. My word I love a tragic antihero. The others were brilliant too, well fleshed out and fully realized.

Thirdly, the story line was so fun, I love a good murder mystery and the locations they visited (oooh I loved hell) were so well described. I had so many kick your feet giggling moments from dialogue too, I flew through this book.

It was lush and atmospheric and phew that ending, cannot wait to see what Célie becomes now.

Echt een goeie enemies to lovers.
