I was a lucky winner in a Goodreads contest and received a ARC!

I was so excited to receive this since Gail Carson Levine is one of my favorite childhood authors. She wrote pretty much the first and only romance I have ever adored. ([b:Ella Enchanted|24337|Ella Enchanted|Gail Carson Levine|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1410727190s/24337.jpg|2485462]. If you haven't read it...what is your life???) So I squealed when I was one of the lucky winners!

Reading this was very nostalgic. I adored Perry. I love that she is a very strong girl but is not perfect. She is the best at everything, except talking to people. She can beat all the other children at sword play - but she can't get them to like her. And it is not due to 'woe is me' reasons, it is due to her ignorance about communication. How to help someone without criticizing them. How to be a support and not a burden.

This book gives so many lessons about our world. Themes of friendship and love are strong. However Levine, as usual, tells a very original tale and throws in a few twists. Sadly now that I am quite a bit older I could see them, but to a younger me they would be magical.

The is a strong theme of acceptance. To love yourself and your nationality/race/religion/sexual orientation etc. When Perry had the conversation with her father asking him if he would still love her even if she was Bamarre, broke my heart. This is a lesson that I am so grateful for Levine to include because I think it is one of the most important for kids to learn.

For myself though, I did feel not as connected to Perry as usual. I felt insta-love for all of Levine's other heroine's but for some reason Perry felt a little rushed to me. But I still loved the plot and I loved watching Perry transform from a privileged brat to a proper princess of her people!

Overall this was a great tale of adventure and magic perfect for 7-15 year olds. I hope lots of kids read about Perry kicking butt!

I definitely wasn’t the target demographic for this book. I thought it was a little too fast-paced and a lot of the characters’ actions didn’t make sense. They came out of no where and I couldn’t connect with any of them. I felt like there was a lot of telling, rather than showing.

Also, the themes of ethnic conflict and predjudice could have been handled a lot better than they were.

Everything you could want in a prequel. The worldbuilding expands, the history gets explained but in a way that is a fun stand-alone adventure. The protagonist was very loveable, the fairy tale flair wonderfully mixed with fantasy military drama, darker than the Two Princesses with a flogging being described happening and with child soldiers dying, so keep that in mind. That said, tiny Drualt lifted this story even further, fun to see the legend as a confident eight-year-old. It was a lovely read, though the audio quality in the audiobook was not great.

Levine's latest is a prequel to The Two Princesses of Bamarre, or maybe even just a stand-alone novel set in the same universe centuries earlier. Levine is using the Rapunzel story as a framework at first, but quickly departs from the traditional version of the tale, as this princess is told by a fairy that she has to lead a revolution for her oppressed people. Good stuff. A-.

I really liked this book and the author mixed things that were in The Two Princesses of Bamarre into this book. I seriously screamed with joy when Drualt appeared and she revealed that he was her brother. I overall loved this book.
