this book was SO LONG AND BORING and I only finished it because I just needed an audiobook to get me to the end of the work season but BOY WAS I DISAPPOINTED, I'm sorry I'm sorry. It was like the author had a checklist of every single question people had asked after reading and musing about The Two Princesses for all the years of their childhood and wanted to address them all at once. Almost nothing happens as scenes, even half the dialogue is "I questioned her" instead of "I asked--" it feels like. And like boy let's beat those morals home huh let's just rub em right in

A fun GCL. I don't remember much about the other Bamarre book. Super light reading.
adventurous fast-paced

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 for this middle grades fantasy. Peregrine was taken from her Bamarrian family as an infant and raised by their oppressors, the Lakti. Lakti royalty, to be exact. When she discovers the truth about her heritage and the magic that lives within her, she finds herself in immense danger. Outcast from everything she knows, she has the chance to lead an uprising to return Bamarre to its former glory. It dragged at times for me, but I think fantasy fans will enjoy it.

2023 review: The girls (6 and 8) loved this read aloud. It took us so much longer to get through than 2 princesses and I also think the girls liked the latter more. My 6 year old had a harder time keeping track of what was going on in this one. Overall, I think 2 princesses made a better read aloud.

Original review: Gail Carson Levine never fails to draw me in and this was no exception.

I love her writing style and characters. It was fun to revisit this world and the plot went in ways that I wasn't expecting. It was a loose Rapunzel retelling, making it fun to see the parallels, but was very unique and it's pretty story and world. I loved the gray characters we encountered and the themes that were explored.

The ending fell a little flat for me. The resolution was a little too easy to be really satisfying, but it wasn't bad.

Overall, a great retelling that I would definitely recommend (along with all of Gail Carson Levine's books).

I loved this book! Such a good addition to the Bamarre series!

A fun prequel to the Two Sisters of Bamarre! It's not nearly as good of a story but it is a lot of fun to see where some of the characters and objects came from and in this book they explore that.

Content warnings: war, death, parent betrayal, and violence.

There is no language and some flirting but no spice.

This isn’t a “sequel”, merely a book that barely takes place in the same world. No updates on a single Two Princesses of Bamarre characters, not even the immortal fairy sister makes an appearance! There’s no point to reading this if you want any continuation from Two Princesses of Bamarre.
