I generally love Gail Carson Levine's work but I particularly liked this prequel. Perry was likable but not perfect, and I appreciated the depth of the culture clash. The fairy tale tie in was crafted well, sprinkled throughout but without dominating the world and Perry's story.

The book was good, I just wasn’t super interested/engaged

As someone who read "The Two Princesses of Bamarre" on repeat as a child, this book is a fantastic prologue to the story that I am familiar with. Seeing familiar faces and hearing familiar names that led up to the story that I hold so very dear left me honestly fulfilled. I still want more about Bamarre and will read every single book that comes out about this universe.

This book was very interesting, and it sucked you into it's world, as all of Gail Carson Levine's books do. It wasn't my favourite of hers, I think largely due to the fact that The people of Bamarre annoyed the heck out of me. I am a straightforward person and their passive-aggressiveness grated on my nerves. Also I'm dumb and didn't know this was a prequel to the 2 Princesses of Bamarre - I thought it was a sequel and was confused until after I finished.

I didn't understand the point of putting in the Rapunzel-like story elements, as the story itself wasn't very Rapunzel like. It didn't even strike me to think of Rapunzel except once in the very beginning when she was stolen, and once at the very end.

A GOOD BOOK BY ALL RIGHTS. If it was a book by any other author it would have gotten at least 4 stars.

Although this is the prequel, I'm glad I read it after "The Two Princesses of Bamarre"! It answered a few questions I had. For more on my review, check out my blog!

This is a fantasy-middle-grade book about bigotry, racism, the many pitfalls of power, colonialism, aggression, slavery, and military-based societies.

Being a middle grade book, it is somewhat naive in the representation of these issues, but still a vivid and powerful exploration of them.

The only reason I am not rating this higher is the fact that I was not as fully emotionally engaged with this book, as I expected to be based on the subject matter.

I was very excited for this book, but it fell a little flat for me. Still enjoyed it, but not as riveting as The Two Princesses of Bamarre. I think I might have preferred a sequel to Addie and Rhys - but there is still hope for that!
