We're having a hard time reading aloud with the lack of routine that comes along with summer -- we *finally* just read the second half of this book this afternoon. The boys liked it (my seven-year-old more than my five-year-old). I thought it was pretty well written -- lots of good descriptive words for such a short story. It does feel a bit dated in places (it was first published in the 1950s!), but the story itself (which is based on a Greek myth) is timeless.

Very cute! I think any young reader would appreciate this. I chuckled then felt sorrow for John’s plight. My emotions were surprisingly up and dow. Throughout this book. :)

A classic from 1952. This book holds up well alongside modern books.
Light. Upbeat. Funny. It is a quick read with two important morals. First, the story is a gentle reminder to be careful what you wish for. Secondly, it is a lesson in moderation, least greed be your downfall.
I very much enjoyed this detailed lesson centered chapter book. My senses were entertained throughout every chapter. I may even read this in class soon (spans several grade levels)!
