Terribly written, of course, but it is Stephen King. Compelling in its own way, and I know I would have adored it had I read it about a dozen years ago. As it was, I found it interesting and it came off to me as a strange mix of The Hobbit and, bizaarely enough, Blood Meridian.

After hearing so much about this series, and enjoying almost everything I have read by Stephen King, this was quite a letdown. About the only good thing I can say is at least now have no compulsion to read the rest of the series.

A slow start to the series that left me with a lot of questions, I'm in no rush to read the next instalment but it's definitely made me commit to the series as a whole
