Interesting book, I enjoyed the storyline and thought the ending with the search for gold unusual.

This book was weird. The thing with the eye and the horse was upsetting. I don't think I like westerns.

Reminds me of the song ‘Tom’s Diner’ but in a book.
Descriptive but the story isn’t going anywhere.

I enjoyed this book, it was written in a fun and engaging tone and explored a time period I am not super familiar with. An enjoyable view into the human condition.

This book surprised me in how much I enjoyed it. The writing is sparse. The story is simple, but the emotions are surprisingly complex for how simple the story is. I was a little let down by the ending, but only because I really wanted to know more.

I was surprised to find myself liking this book since the main character is a hired killer. Eli is a very reluctant killer and would like to get out of it. He got into the business because his older brother's two worst vices, drinking and anger, frequently left him in need of support. Eli is that unswerving support but he has begun to question what his life has become. The story opens with them receiving their latest assignment: to track down and kill a man in San Francisco at the height of the gold rush.
A witty story about two brothers who work for The Commodore and do his killing for him. Eli has had enough but agrees to finish the last job before becoming a supply store owner. Charlie is not so inclined. It felt spaghetti western and I could feel similarities to Django Unchained in terms of my thoughts and reactions to their actions. An enjoyable afternoon read. I think my husband will enjoy it as well.
