Read this one for a book club, where we've been trying to keep our choices light because of the general state of the world. Blurbs on the back describe this book as "hilarious" and it was turned into a comedic movie, but I felt the creeping sadness and true-to-the-time-period gore prevented me from really finding this book to be funny.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would - it's a quick read with enough forward movement to keep me intetested. The writing style is charming, and it's not without humor, but the sadness carried by narrator Eli is palpable.

Not a traditional Western, but enjoyable if you (like me) enjoy stories set in the time period. Not sure who I would recommend this one to, it was a unique read.

DID NOT FINISH: 21%

Maybe I’m not in the right mood and haven’t properly got the chance to get into this. I’ve read a few chapters a day. Like 2/3. Since they’re short chapters normally I’d have read more but also been reading a comic that I wanted to finish for the library.
Might come back to this another time when I can give it proper attention, or might just not be for me.

I enjoyed this. The terse chapters made it a quick read and seemingly a simple one, but it was more than the sum of its parts. There is bitter humor and ghastly violence in equal measure, and an intelligent and matter-of-fact and quite believable narrator carrying me along.

I LOVED the descriptions and the dialogue — felt very much like a Cohen Brothers script. I could see how people might find fault in the lack of a strong narrative arc or any significant changes in the characters, but this was still a thoroughly enjoyable read. Can’t wait to see the movie!

The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4*)

After reading Butcher's Crossing I thought I'd stick with the Wild West and I think it was worth it even though the book wasn't quite as good as I expected.

„Hermann Kermit Warm is going to die. The enigmatic and powerful man known only as the Commodore has ordered it, and his henchmen, Eli and Charlie Sisters, will make sure of it. Though Eli doesn’t share his brother’s appetite for whiskey and killing, he’s never known anything else. But their prey isn’t an easy mark, and on the road from Oregon City to Warm’s gold-mining claim outside Sacramento, Eli begins to question what he does for a living-and whom he does it for.“

I could picture the two protagonists very well and I could even identify with Eli at times. He's basically a decent guy, but the circumstances of his childhood squeeze him into something he doesn't fit.
