I really loved this book. The old west, brother assassins, and a call to conscience? I'm in.

Maybe my favorite part of the book is the banter between the two brothers as their relationship is so clearly that of brothers, and the internal dialogue our narrator has with himself about what he is doing, what he wants to be doing, and what he'll do next. I loved it.

The movie doesn't do it justice. I watched it afterward and was *shocker* bummed that it missed so many parts of the book that made it great - including the relationships between the men and their horses. C'mon!

DNF but I got a plot summary of the last third and it just continues to be meandering, unfunny bullshit.

I was a bit hesitant to pick up this novel as I never really read "westerns", but was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. The story is set during the Gold Rush follows Eli and Charlie Sisters, infamous assassins, as they make their way to California to do their latest job. The story is told through Eli, the more compassionate of the brothers, who is slowly becoming disillusioned with the life he is leading.

The story itself was well written and moved at a good pace. I also loved DeWitt's simple, direct writing style. I did, however, find the ending a bit out of tune with the rest of the story, but that's not to say it didn't make sense. I believe my feeling stemmed from a few plot points, introduced early on, that didn't seem to go anywhere. It could be that they were meant to provide more atmosphere and set the tone for the novel, but it was something that was in the back of my mind as I read and I wasn't wholly satisfied when nothing seemed to come of it.

Overall, an excellent book and an excellent read that I would definitely recommend.
