The pace of this book is so smooth even with multiple murders, disease, and loneliness. I'm finding it difficult to articulate why I enjoyed the story so much, but I did.

In 1850, two henchmen who happen to be brothers set out from Oregon City to San Francisco to dispatch a man who has stolen from their boss. The journey is full of crazy antics-including a horse almost attacked by a bear, numerous killings and near death experiences, a group of Indians that steal their fortune and finally a man who knows how to make gold glow. The younger brother Eli has never truly had the stomach for their line of work and with each mishap he realizes that this life is just not meant for him.
A truly odd ball of a book and I can’t in all honesty decide if I liked it or not. It’s certainly interesting and you’ll never be able to guess what’ll happen next but it’s just so strange. I will say that it bothered me how careless and negligent they seemed towards their horses, it irked me to hear how dispensable they felt the horses were. Other than that it was ok, weird but ok.

Really enjoyable read, not at all what I was expecting from the title - this tale chronicles the journey of two brothers as they make their way towards a Gold Rush-era California. Ingenious concept, strong characters, and excellent narration made this a great story.

I couldn't put it down. This would make a good movie, along the lines of " Pulp Fiction", because it's gory. But the movie would fail the Bechdel Test and that's too bad. A very man centric book, but one in which the characters debate their moral choices and come up with rationales for their terrible actions. Actually, please do not make it a movie, too much violence involving animals. I kept hoping that the characters could walk away from their disastrous life , and that made me read fast!!

Top-notch dark comedy. I loved the Eli and Tubs storyline. These brothers are psychopaths and yet somehow endearing…
