You ever get like 25 pages into a book and know you won't enjoy it? Yeah that's me with this book. It's a feeling and I trust my gut.

I thought this was a good book. I had a good time reading it. I liked the characters, Koffi and Ekon. I thought the pacing was off at times. I like the worldbuilding. I'm excited to see what happens in the sequel.

Beasts of Prey is about a girl, indentured to a Night Zoo, and an aspiring warrior who join forces to take down a monster who has been hunting people for a century. While the beginning of the book is not slow, the eagerly awaited hunt takes its time to get underway. Once the forest scene starts, the mythical creatures are fascinating to read about. The male protagonist's personality is particularly interesting. There are some elements of the plot that are predictable but overall, this African mythology fantasy is a great read.

4.5 - Such a good YA read - the world building, the characterization, the relationships, the flow of the plot, everything worked so well! Koffi and Ekon are an unlikely duo that join forces to catch the Shetani, a dangerous beast, to improve both of their lives.

The only caveat I have, which honestly could be flipped into strength, is that it is pretty solidly fantasy and it has superb world building. This does mean, starting the book can be a little slow and confusing as the world is being fleshed out. However it is worth reading because it is so good.

Koffi and Ekon were both solid narrators with growth throughout the story. Their characterizations and motivations were understandable and they were both easy to root for. The plot flowed nicely with some “twists” that were set up well and some twists that surprised me.

The world building is probably some of the best I have read recently. The city, the culture, the politics and the magic all felt super fleshed out and I could definitely picture the society it was based in.

Some recent YA reads have disappointed, but this one really worked!
