16-year-old Koffi is an indentured servant for the notorious Night Zoo where they care for all sorts of magical and fearsome creatures. Koffi and her mother work to pay off their family debts. One night, Koffi accidentally unleashes a power that she is unfamiliar with and ends up running into Ekon during the chaos.

Ekon is the second son of an elite warrior from the Son of the Six. On the night of his final rite of passage to become a warrior a fire from the Night Zoo interrupts his plans and turns his life upside down. Ekon and Koffi run into the Shetani, a monster who has been killing people of the city for nearly a century inside the jungle.

Ekon and Koffi form a tentative alliance to capture the Shetani - true motives unbeknownst to each other - and begin the hunt. They quickly realize once they get inside the Greater Jungle that it is steeped in wild magic and untold dangers.

I absolutely loved the world-building in this book. It was beautifully written and I could not wait to find out what was going to happen next. While Koffi and Ekon were in the jungle, I was a little scared reading about some of the monsters and beasts that they came across. I cannot wait to read the next book!
