I read this book in one day... actually I began at 8am and finished around 4pm. I loved it. I thought it was fast paced and I love when Middle Grade novels are told in the first person point of view. I think it gives the reader a better view of the character and they feel like they are in the book. It was definitely creepy and the fact that it takes place in New Orleans just makes ti that much better. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves ghostly, creepy, paranormal middle grade fiction. Now, I must buy book 2 the series.

Derek Stone lives with his brother, Ronny, and his father. Derek's mother left when he was 4 and now lives in France; he hasn't seen her since then. They are a close knit family and all is well, until a tragic accident happens and Derek is the only one of the family to survive. His uncle, his only family left, comes to take care of him and after a month he is starting to adjust. Just as he is cleaning out his brother's room, policemen show up with Ronny, miraculously alive! However, Ronny is acting weird... Is it really Ronny? Or someone else?
I gave this book 4 stars. It is a book that keeps you reading and is pretty creepy and mysterious.

Characters: 10/20 (1/2 star)- Some characters were described well, but we didn't really see their different personalities or descriptions that much just because it was so short.
Plot: 10/20 (1/2 star)- It's like we took a small section out of a bigger book and decided to make it it's own book. Considering how small this book is, I feel like they could have combined a couple of the books so we get more of a story in each one.
Setting: 12/20 (1/2 star)- The bayou was very well described, but the other places didn't have much detail for me to picture them.
Writing: 16/20 (3/4 star)- I wasn't expecting the writing to creep me out like it did (especially about Waldo). It was very creepy and seemed very dark for a kids book.
Enjoyment: 14/20 (3/4 star)- I give the book credit for being more than I expected. It really freaked me out while I was reading it.

This is the first book in a new series. The link goes to the first book in the series only. Amazon will direct you to the remainder. This series is a new twist on the zombie tale and has a very Gothic feel. The dead are coming back! Derek Stone, his father, and brother are in a terrible train wreck exactly where another train wrecked many years before. At first he believes his brother Ronny to be dead, then Ronny's body returns inhabited by the soul of Virgil Black who was killed in the original accident. The books are not really stand alones, each leaves too many unanswered questions that you hope will be forthcoming in the next of the series; hence the entire series being listed under one entry.
