I enjoyed this one as much as the others. I love listening to these because the reader has a lot of lovely Kent accents that she uses. I looked up hop picking in google images and there are some amazing old pictures on there.

I really enjoyed the first two Maisie Dons novels, but by the third the mystery was predictable. This one redeemed itself in that regard with a puzzling mystery that kept you wondering to the end and even by the time you had it figured out there was still a surprise at the end. Although a good mystery, I felt that the story was compromised by the teaching and preaching. The teaching revolves around gypsy culture and focused on their language and cultural practices. That made for a lot of explaining and defining that was irrelevant to the story. The preaching revolved around bigotry and bullying and I’m unsure if it was included to instruct us in correct attitudes towards bullying or make sure we knew that the author has an appropriate attitude towards such things. Regardless it was also irrelevant to the story and distracting from an otherwise good piece of fiction.

I'm glad I tried this one because it looks like Maisie is finally moving out of her morose frame of mind and recovering from her war-time experiences enough to maybe get some enjoyment out of life again.

Shocking ending, somewhat unresolved because it seems to me that the crime goes unpunished.

Fun period mystery. Kinda just want I fancied reading at the time, but not high art or anything. One thing I found annoying: often the detective, Maisie Dobbs, would uncover some evidence, but it's not shared with the reader - felt a little bit of a cheat in a mystery novel. Still, pleasant enough. Good reading when ill, I'd imagine.

Jacqueline Winspear delivers again.

Maisy always gives us a layered mystery. She always seems to encounter at least one more mystery than she sets out to solve, and there are always social concerns her character speaks to. This story was no different. It highlighted Roma people and portended the fear of others that contributed to the Holocaust.

The audiobook, though wasn’t as god as 3 and 4. The performer changed the pronunciation of Maurice from the English pronunciation to the American—maybe the French?

Her friend, Priscilla, had a different voice in the middle than she did at the beginning—and certainly different than she had in previous books.
