this story wasn't particularly great. the pacing was lightspeed and it was overall lacking the depth that i really wanted. but me and this series are in a committed relationship and i will continue devouring it.

This series just keeps getting better and better. It's overall a dystopian series where the Earth was hit with an asteroid and people are trying to survive either against the elements, lack of food, or evil other people.

This story is somewhat connected to the last book, Citadel so it's best read after that one, but all of the books are standalones technically. Frankly most of the books have comments about characters from other books so I'm almost planning on re-reading the entire series once it's over on book 8.

In this book, Breanna, who we met in the last book, is trying to figure out how to live after having had to take care of her sister Del for many years. Del met her future husband, Cole, in the last book and the three of them had been living in a community called Monument. Breanna had given up almost everything (including her body) in order to take care of her sister and now feels restless and not sure how to go on when her sister is not as dependent as she had been.

Aidan, also introduced in Citadel, is a man who has been doing odd jobs for anyone who needs them (trading, selling, and transferring things from one camp ot another). When Breanna starts trying to do some odd jobs, they clash.

In trying to figure out how to work in the same area, they get a joint project from a local community to go into a ski resort and try to find wine that was left there. They are competing until Breanna hurts her leg, and they get snowed in. They learn to get along better during that time and work together to finish the job.

They have a conflict and are separated when a larger issue comes up - a group of people from all over are going to try to take down a local resort that had been controlled by a gang of men who previously kidnapped Breanna, and also had a large number of women and children under their control. In this giant shootout, people get hurt and die, and Breanna admits her feelings for Aidan.

I haven't ever liked dystopian anything but randomly read Haven a couple of years ago and fell in love with this series. It involves strong women, community, broken people, a return to the land and people just trying to survive. I can't recommend it highly enough.

In this book, there is off the page discussion of Breanna's previous attachments to men to survive, along with off the page discussion of murder/suicide and starvation of other characters we hadn't met.

Sanctuary is another immersive installment in Claire Kent's fascinating post-apocalyptic Kindred series. As usual, this is a one-sitting read. This is probably not the book to start with, as the relationship between Aidan and Breanna may feel like instalove without the narrative context of at least the previous book. Do check the trigger warnings as Breanna has essentially particularly in self-inflicted sex work which has resulted in a lot of trauma.

I love revisiting this world and would recommend you give it a go. I'm such a wuss that I never would have imagined that a post-apocalytic romance would become my favourite series, but it truly has.
