Hm. I mean it as equal parts compliment and insult when I say this book is very “readable.” (Sort of ironic considering I had to supplement my reading with the audiobook)
Reading this felt more like reading a diary than a book which there is nothing wrong with it’s just not my cup of tea. They all desperately need therapy.

from her being ashamed to talk about her background to proudly writing about it in this memoir, truly shows the amount of strength Walls has.

As someone who doesn’t really write reviews, this one I feel like just needs to be explained (especially to my friends who on here who still want to read the book)
Jeanette Walls is an amazing author and wrote a beautifully tragic prose. However, her memoir was not for me. It was not something I enjoyed. It’s redundant, with one bad thing after the other. It reminds me of certain topics that I’ve discussed with family/friends over the years that we are usually ashamed of, so it’s a bit triggering. It also felt like some of the details were too long or unnecessary to make her point—without giving anything away, the memoir is in “4 chapters”. It’s just continuous drama happening within each chapter. And it’s from toddler age until adulthood. Which, a lot of memoirs/autobiographies do tend to start that way but, the details just become so overwhelming. So this book is not for the faint of heart.
Again, beautiful attention to detail. But it’s not something I will gravitate towards. 3.5 ⭐️

If I had thought this was a work of fiction, I would have hated it and thought that the author just went way over the top. Completely unbelievable.
However it's a memoir.
