the weirdest and most odd book ever. the one star is for the creativity of a 7 year old

The Hunt is written by Andrew Fukuda and features a new, vampire world that is vastly different from Twilight or Marked. This novel spins a tale around a young human (or heper), Gene, who is forced into the 'Heper Hunt', an event that he definitely does not want to be involved in. There, he meets Ashley June, a girl he has gone to school with but rarely talks to. Slowly, they start to grow closer together as the hunt draws closer, but Gene needs to be careful not to give his scent away or else the vampires might go after him instead!

While I found myself reading page after page of this book, I was left with a very confused feeling after finishing this book.
The entire story was written rather simply. I didn't need to look up a word or re-read sentences that seemed too complicated. But due to this I found that Fukuda was lacking an audience. It seemed that he was unsure of what age group he was writing to and it seemed to switch every so often.
The plot wasn't exactly surprising, with nearly every 'plot twist' being extremely obvious. Except, of course, for the plot twist in the last page. That twist wasn't expected, but it didn't surprise me. In fact, it just made me sigh in disappointment. I felt like the author was struggling to end the story in a way that would make readers pick up a sequel, so he forced himself to add something that might make it more interesting.
The overall story was very interesting, especially how Gene acts. He's trying so hard not to be caught he's practically killing himself which was a terrible idea.
The biggest disappointment, like I had said before, were some of the twists and 'interesting parts'.
Spoiler I already guessed that Ashley June was a 'heper' and that he would have to go down to the 'heper village' to get water.

What saved this book, and why I gave it three stars, was because of the interesting language used. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the new term 'heper' and how they seemed to be disgusted at the word and the creatures, however when they saw one the vampires would light up and get excited. Not just language, but ideas like how they would scratch their elbows when they found something amusing. All of these things added to the full immersion of the reader into this new world.

1,5/5

Ja vážne netuším, čo na tejto knihe kto vidí. Toto bolo absolútne príšerné a o ničom... Hlúpe postavy, dej o ničom... Ani náhodou to nebolo ako upírske Hunger games. HG je skvelé. Toto bolo zlé. Posledných päť viet boli vlastne lepšie, než celá kniha...

oh wow O__O

what an amazing ending. *mind blows*

This was quite a fun read. It had a different take on the vampire story than most of what you see out there now. It's more of a survival story, "us against them, but don't we kind of want to be them, too?" kind of thing. I would recommend it--it's an intriguing story with good mythology. I do wish they had done a bit more back story, but I would imagine that will come with other books in the series. I'm looking forward to reading the next one!

Well, I have to start by saying why does Australia have a different cover from the rest of the world? Not that I mind, personally, i like this cover better, because, you know, you see that hot guy staring at you right now? Yeah, he is the reason I bought this book. RAWR, that is a good looking dude right there, can someone tell me who the model is? Because, well, WOW, is all I can say at the moment ;)
The cover for the second book looks cool too. Now, the characters, well, i must say it's a little hard to choose a favotite characters when they don't really have names. You'll be like Hey, A3, F5, 62 etc. if I was trying to follow Gene around (You'll understand if you read the book...) And the fact that there wasn't much description of people (But, don't worry, my imagination fixed that up (Or Easy A reference; My imagination kinda "Shot that horse in the face")

So yeah, i really loved this book. It took me forever to read it, but it was still really great. And if you haven't already noticed, towards the end my status updates start to go out of control, i think they space about 3% apart, because i had to pace myself, so i didn't rush to the end to see what happens. So much suspense, i needed to know!

Aaaand, now onto the spoiler bit :)

Spoiler GENE'S DAD!!! The scientist was GENE'S DAD!! C'mon! How did I not see this coming! Of course he was!!! (Star wars reference:

Okay, okay, I just had to do that!!
And another love triangle for the love of god!!!!......Give me more!!! Damn, Gene, you take this never ending love triangle theme to the next level!! I want more!!! But, c'mon, seriously dude, You didn't even go back for Ashley, yes, I know, I know, you were under a lot of pressure.. Yes, you were being hunted by vampire/zombie things (Hey, did anyone notice the twilight reference in this book? lol) but you still left her. And yes, Gene, I will keep making you feel bad about this until I have the next book I my hands. *Passes me [b:The Prey|15802620|The Prey|Andrew Fukuda|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1352117332s/15802620.jpg|20386810], with a snarl* Not even then...

A couple of notes that are spoilers that I just have to mention:
I was like, how can no one have an name but Ashley does? And then when you found out why Gene gave that to her...Stalker, much ;)

for those of you who missed the ever-lasting spoiler part, I have a few things to ask.
1) Did anyone else notice the twilight/modern vampire reference in this book? (And if you haven't read the book, there are no spoilers, so read it anyway) I'll put it in here for your enjoyment:

"After all, if the roles were reversed and it was people who became extinct, people's theories would likely be rife with exaggerations and distortions; instead of sleeping in sleep-holds, they'd sleep in coffins; creatures of the night, they'd be so invisible to the eye that even in front of mirrors, they'd lack a reflection; pale and emaciated, they were weak and benign beings who could coexist peacefully alongside hepers, somehow restraining themselves from ripping hepers to ribbons and sucking down their blood; they'd all invariably be incredibly good-looking with perfect hair there'd be some outright confabulations as well: Their ability to swim with dizzying speed under water; and ludicrous and laughable notions about people-heper romances
-Page 88, Australian Edition, Gene, The Hunt, Andrew Fukuda
That was a good and inconspicuous way to put it, Andrew ;)

And 2nd, What are these creatures? Vampires (The quote above makes it sound like our equivalent to our modern vampires) or zombies (read the book, and you'll know why I think that) or a mixture of both?

I'm gonna stop now, I think I've written my fair share for today :) Might add more later I'll try not to, for your sake ;)

This was a really good paranormal vampire romance book. Humans are almost extinct and are a rare delicacy for vampires. A few humans try to blend in and live alongside the vampires, hiding their sweat and putting on a mask ans fake fangs. Then there's the hunt where the a group of vampires are chosen to hunt the vampires.
A lot of unexpected twists I didn't see coming and a cliff-hanger ending. It took a little buit for the story to really get going but it was good.

2.5 stars

Unfortunately I was not pleased with this book very much. I didn't care for the characters, I didn't feel the suspense, and I didn't really like the world. I feel ridiculous that I didn't even put together what the creatures were in this world *EFFING DUH!* but paranormal books that don't stand up for humans irritate me. And it's also really annoying when I have to hear the same strange word over and over again. Blah.

Parts were pretty predictable. Also, Gene was kind of boring. I get that he had a hard life trying to hide his true nature, and it had to be severely difficult. But I just kept feeling like he was making the wrong choices over and over again. I didn't feel like it was written very well (there was something about his voice being hoarse while he was screaming for a horse.. come on now). The most exciting part was literally the last few words for me. That's ridiculous, so I probably won't continue. Oh well.
