A good solid book, i really enjoyed the premise but there were moments where the writing felt shaky. Such as things being over described
fast-paced

It was obvious while reading that the author has such a deep love for the South and is critical of its various evils. I really enjoyed this book but wish the end were not so abrupt. It felt like there wasn’t an off-ramp, just a drop-off. Despite that, this is still a strong debut.

And what an experience to read this book with the soundtrack of cicada screams outside my window.

Xan Kaur's debut novel is an absolutely breathtaking southern gothic, perfectly poised to be everyone's book of the summer! You'll be drenched in the Georgia humidity as secrets, mystery, and corruption unfold in this masterfully written tale. The atmosphere and characters are rich and authentic, creating a fantastic reading experience.

This isn’t my usual sort of read, but I like to branch out sometimes. And I’m glad I did! The premise of this book was awesome. I just never felt fully pulled into the story. There was so much potential, and there were definitely moments that got strong reactions from me. But I wanted more. More atmosphere, more of the characters, more backstory.

Still, there was a lot of good here. I’m glad I read it. Now excuse me while I side-eye cicadas forever.

4.5 stars, I found this very compelling and eerie and didn't realize it was YA until towards the end. This feels like the incessant sound of cicadas drove someone mad enough to blame the devil.
