When a book gives you a pit in your stomach till the very end, you know it was an engrossing read. This book really brought the rural South to life while exploring the dark past and the classist divide. I'm impressed that this was a debut novel and how well crafted it was. Definitely will recommend this book to others. I do wish that we got to see more though at the end, like how Sam got to live with her brother and Isaiah's relationship with his dad.

This debut young adult horror takes place in small town, rural Georgia from the POVs of four teens. The teens all know each other, but as the novel progresses their family connections and relationships become more clearly intertwined.

There’s a myth in Carrion that three in the forms of a snake, a cicada, and a raven make deals that they don’t lose. The town observes the emergence of a flock of cicadas every thirteen years, and mysterious things always happen around that time. This summer is the year cicadas return, and the disappearance of a teen seems to be the first mysterious event of the year.

The novel centers the question: how far will people go to protect their position or their family’s position in society? How does the status quo uphold differences based on race, ethnicity, wealth, power, and exclusion — and how was that hierarchy created in the first place? I think this book is valuable for teens to read, although the messages are a bit overt for my (adult) tastes. The audiobook was great, and I think a film or tv adaptation would be excellent.

I like the world. I loved the inclusivity of races, cultures, and sexual preferences. It was done very naturally and in a way that didn’t draw attention to it or make it feel forced. There was no over-explaining of cultural norms or any of that. I think the author is an excellent writer. I did sort pick up on where the story was heading and none of the twists got me. But overall I feel it was very well done.
