I kept reading through this book because I thought there was going to be some good payoff in the end, but it just made me feel weird the entire time. I'm assuming it was intentional, but it just didn't work for me how unrealistic these young characters talked. It felt like more of a trauma dump  than a realistic depiction of human emotion.

‘the world cannot give’ is a coming-of-age drama set in a boarding school with dark academia elements as well as themes of wealth, obsession, devotion, and toxic relationships. it follows an anxious, compassionate, overachieving female lead, named laura and her fascination with a deceased author and his book. following his footsteps, she looks for a place to call home, looks for somewhere transcendent to belong. she eventually becomes entangled with the school’s choir as a result of her attraction to virginia, the choir’s intense and charismatic leader. as someone who absolutely adored ‘the secret history’, i enjoyed every bit of this book and recommend it to anyone who is in the mood for something dark, mysterious and philosophical. the writing was stunning and it’s definitely a book i would like to revisit in the future.

I enjoyed this. Sapphic dark academia, fun! I kept thinking something paranormal was going to happen, I’m glad it didn’t. Laura’s infatuation blinded her naivety to being manipulated by a sociopath, but I think she knew all along. The social media bits didn’t seem necessary or relevant given the academic focus of the plot. As was the use of Christianity, it didn’t seem well understood but maybe that’s just my understanding of it. The whole thing was rather predictable but I couldn’t put it down!!
