This book was so unique. I loved the setting at the prestigious and competitive school and the characters were well developed and super individual.
I wasn't particularly drawn to the main storyline with choir and religion, but I was really interested in the darker tones that hid beneath the surface. Ultimately, this was a very dark book and I wish some of that had been shown a little sooner as I think my interest would have been held a bit better.
I listened to the audio for this novel and the narrator did a good job. She was theatrical without being over the top and I thought she told the story in an entertaining way.
Overall, I ended up enjoying this book, but I think that's mostly because it went out with such a bang. Much of the book was a little drawn out and I wasn't always super invested.
It's a unique read and definitely enjoyable, but not one I'll be likely to often recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the copy.

Idk, Laura girl crushed too close to the sun and forgot herself
i thought i’d like this more bc it was described ‘secret history and price of salt’ …. criminal offence to put this book anywhere near those. yes it’s dark academia vibes, and i like teen culty books they r always really cool but this was just boring a bit. like a barely remember what happened. couldn’t understand anyone’s motivations for anything. just seemed like the author wanted to write a book with these themes for the sake of it, and didn’t actually have any good ideas. sorry to the author.
This book has me feeling very perplexed. Obviously I enjoyed the reading experience enough to finish the book, but there were also so many parts of this that I actually disliked. Some parts read like poetry and other parts felt exactly like watching a teen drama, which considering the ages seems appropriate. Are we meant to like any of the characters? Are we meant to actually care what happened to any of them? I can't even explain what kept me drawn into the pages, except maybe just a gross fascination with watching someone shipwreck their soul.
“The thing about growing up,” Isobel says, “is that you learn that sometimes, bad people are just bad people. And most people, in the end, are bad people.”
What the fuck.
What the actual fuck.
Virginia. When I get my hands on you Virginia.
WHAT IS IT WITH THESE VERY MENTALLY ILL LESBIANS COMMITTING CRIMES, ENDING UP DEAD, AND THEN LEAVING WHAT COULD’VE BEEN A GREAT LOVER AS NOTHING MORE THAN A SCRAP!?
It’s always the endings of books like this that get me all fucking riled up.
And I tabbed that quote above because I thought it was a wonderful quote, I GO BACK TO IT…AND ISOBEL WAS LITERALLY GIVING US FORESHADOWING!? BUT SHE FELL BACK INTO THE TRAP!? I want to know her thought process because girl switched up so fast

queer love and how much of your beliefs, morals, and while being you would give up to be loved back.. the chase for something more, something transcendent. wish it ended a little differently but at the same time ur was an ending that brings you back from the high of transcendence to remember that these are high schoolers, impulsive and not above childish acts
