Feels very wrong rating a book like this 5⭐️ but if you were ever going to read a book about a female dv survivor, this is a pretty good one (although veeery graphic).

Will hit you in the feeeeeels.

I had A LOT of feelings about this book. It took me a little while to really get into it because the beginning was a bit too technical, sports-wise, for me. I also didn’t totally believe Iris and August’s connection at first, because they had met so few times and yet seemed so infatuated. However, their connection becomes more and more believable throughout the book. It’s clear they’re star-crossed lovers who just had bad timing the first few go rounds, and once their romance gets going, WOW is it hot.

The part of the book I struggled with, though, is the sexual and domestic abuse. This book needs a trigger warning so that readers who don’t want to fall into a sports romance thinking it’s going to be sexy and fun don’t get blindsided by very graphic rape scenes. I wish I had known about them so I could have skipped them. The author does an amazing job of depicting Iris healing from this abuse, however, through strong female relationships and counselling.

The ending felt a bit rushed, and there’s a lot of violence in a small amount of words which was surprising and hard to deal with.

This book is worth a read, though, if only because Kennedy Ryan is an amazing, talented writer with beautiful prose and strong female characters you root for from the get-go.
