This was so much fun! I could envision a number of the scenes from this book playing out in a Ghibli movie, and Miuko was a really fun character to follow. Her growing friendship with Geiki was so sweet and so much fun and it got me emotional so many goddamn times. And the many side characters they encountered over their journey were all so fun.

I will say this story, particularly in the first half, is quite episodic with the little adventures Miuko and Geiki have on their journey, and that style mightn’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Also the midpoint of the story went in a really interesting direction that I was not expecting, which may also throw some readers off.

And while the antagonist and Miuko’s conflict with them is definitely one that we’ve seen many times before, Chee took it in the direction that I wish was taken more.

All round I had such a fun time with this. Also this book pairs great with Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust, so I definitely recommend if you’re a fan of one, you should absolutely check out the other.

I liked this book but I didn’t love it. There were a lot of cute moments and I loved all the friends Miuko made along her journey. I wanted more for Miuko. She was so angry at the injustice of the world and I wanted her to act on it.

“She didn’t need a curse to feed her malevolence, for she was a woman of Awara. She was something to be restricted, excluded, suppressed, subjugated, owned. She had anger enough to fuel her for a thousand lifetimes”
