I enjoyed this version, but I know enough to understand there is probably a lot more going on in the novel, so it looks like I'm still going to have to read the original one of these days. It was easy to pick up on the satire of the Russian literary and social scene. It was a little more difficult to pick up on the parallels between the Pontius Pilate novel and power societies. I think the novel might make those connections clearer. Still, I'm very glad to finally at least know the plot. This book has been on my radar since at least 1993. I enjoyed the illustrations. They were thoughtful and set an appropriate tone.

Absurdist books like this give me trouble as my mind can’t wrap around what is going on and the meaning. I love a graphic novel but the content of this was more confusing to me than enlightening, I think I need more background information on the timeframe and context this was written in.

I don't know if I like the art of this. Good dramatic facial expressions but the rest seems poor. I'll have to read the original to see what I think of this version.

This graphic adaptation isn't visually entrancing enough to justify how much of Bulgakov's gorgeous prose and skillful character development was left out. I was enticed by the idea of actually seeing the masterful imagery designed by Bulgakov, but I was disappointed not only by the quality of the illustrations, but also the inept job that these images do to tell the tale.

Not my kind of art.
